My great-grandfather, Francesco Giuliano came to the United States as a
young man in 1904. He settled in Long Branch, New Jersey and became one
of the first Italian immigrants to settle there. He worked as a gardener
and farmer for large family estates in the surrounding area. He walked
to work in the extreme heat and bitter cold, making more money than he
ever would've back in Italy. He sent for my great-grandmother, Anna Tomaino
in 1906 and they were married at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in
Long Branch, September of that year. They had 8 children, the youngest
being my grandfather Sam. Frank and Anna created strong family values that
are still evident in our family today. There are 19 grandchildren, 35 great
grandchildren, and we are now into the 4th generation. Although the neighborhood
has changed, their story hasn't. It's up to us to keep their stories alive,
as a way to honor them for their courage, sacrifice, and opportunity they
created for all of us
