CIRINO VASI and ANGELINA MACLI
By Fran Vasi
MESSINA

Cirino Vasi came to the United States in 1902 to make his fortune; he came from San Fratello Sicily, by way of Naples aboard the Archimede, arriving in April, a couple of weeks after his 23rd birthday. He settled in Amsterdam, New York.

In 1906, Angelina Macli traveled aboard the ship Italia from Palermo Italy to join her brother, Benedetto in New York. Angelina lived with her aunt, known to the family as Aunt Travaglia, who ran a boarding house in Amsterdam; Angelina contributed by doing sewing out of the home. One day a young man, Cirino, brought a pair of pants for mending; Angelina must have sparked his interest and to catch hers he gave her a 50 cent tip! On January 5, 1908 Angelina and Cirino were married in Amsterdam, New York. In Amsterdam, they had three daughters: Teresa born in 1910, Catherine in 1912 and Carmella in 1913.

In 1913 Cirino and Angelina returned to San Fratello with their daughters; in San Fratello, Angelina gave birth to their first son, Benjamin in 1915. Cirino decided it would be better for the family to return to the United States. He traveled ahead with the expectation of sending the money for the passage for Angelina, Teresa, Catherine, Carmella and Benjamin; however World War I broke out and the family was unable to join Cirino for 3-4 years.

Upon their return, they settled in Cleveland, Ohio where Cirino worked for New York Central Railroad. Their second son, Carmen was born in 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio. When an accident ended his career at the railroad, Cirino moved the family to Batavia, New York; a third son, Salvatore was born in 1926 and, finally, Mary was born in 1927.

In the early 1940’s a letter arrived from Angelina’s brother Benedetto, from whom they had not heard from in years. He was in California! In 1943 Cirino, Angelina, Teresa, Carmen, Salvatore and Mary headed west. Carmella, now married to Joseph Trolio, followed in 1945 after the birth of their son, Nick. Catherine, married to Anthony Salvato remained in New York..

Cirino and Angelina lived their remaining years in Sacaramento, California. Salvatore B. Vasi (grandson) and Fran (his wife) are currently taking up the research Sal’s mother started some years ago. We hope to discover more of the story of Cirino and Angelina’s life in Sicily and the United States.
