By His Loving Daughter Donna
Luigi Ciavarella was born on March 15, 1893 in San Marco in Lamis. He was the third of twelve children of Carmine and Caterina (Faggianella) Ciavarella. He is a twin. His twin brother's name is Giuseppi. In 1910, at 17 years of age, and alone, he emigrated to the United States. He was met in Chicago by his sponsor and from there he went to Mandan, North Dakota, where he lived his entire life.
In January of 1917 he met Rose Swindling and one month later on February 14, 1917 they were married in St. Joseph's Catholic church. Rose could not speak Italian and Luigi spoke very little English. They were very happy together. They were good to each other and had a good life together.
Luigi worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad until he retired. He worked very hard on the railroad and was loved by everyone. He was a very happy go lucky man and had many friends: Sam Caronie, Peter Guiadini, Jim Lozeno, Len Fracisso to mention a few. They would all gather at the Ciavarella home on the weekends and sing and dance to all the Italian songs. Luigi made the best home made wine. They would push all the furniture out of the room and have a lot of fun.
Luigi had many talents, but gardening was his favorite. You could find Luigi out in his garden at five in the morning before he went to work. He loved the outdoors.
Luigi helped the poor all he could. When someone would knock on his door he always told Rose to make something and she always did. The word got around town about Luigi Ciavarella; how he had a big heart and how he would never refuse to feed or to help someone in need. He was the best father and husband and a wonderful person who would give you the shirt off his back.
Luigi died at the age of 66 on April 16, 1959; Rose died on May 16, 1972. They continue to live in the hearts of their children and grandchildren. Their children are Herman who died May 11, 2001. His wife Adlaide is alive and dearly loved. There is Antonio who is married to Agnes; Katherine who is alone was married to Adam Bernhardt who passed away October 20, 1972 . Leonard is married to Rosemary; Dorothy is married to Ralph Weber; Cecelia is married to Herman Dosch; Joseph is married to Betty; Donna (who wrote this story) is married to Jim Mayor. Her first husband, Leo Miller, died in February of 2002. Ken Ciavarella is married to Val who died in 2001.
Luigi's memory lives on with his love ones. They have inherited the ways of there Italian father who they love still today . Hats off to Luigi Ciavarella .
